ROLE SUMMARY
This is a leadership role that will be responsible for both setting strategic direction and implementing practical standards and solutions for our project based business.  As the Subject Matter Expert, this individual will effectively collaborate with a team of design engineers, project managers and engineering consultants to design, review and approve electrical engineering scope of work for a wide range of commercial, government and utility solar PV projects, energy storage projects and microgrid implementations.  This position will provide technical oversight and expertise during design and construction of projects prepared by both in-house and 3rd-party designers. In addition, this role will include responsibilities related to utility coordination and interconnection approval, internal process improvement, development of standard details, product evaluation, and general technical support to operations and sales teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for the following:
  • Provide technical oversight and peer review of commercial, government and utility solar PV projects, energy storage projects and microgrids designed by a team of Project Engineering Managers and 3rd-party engineering firms.
  • Provide Value Engineering analysis in collaboration with project managers and estimators to create a more competiive offering and improve project margins while ensuring qulatiy, safety and code compliance.
  • Work with local utilities and AHJs to expedite project approvals and ensure designs meet all requirements for interconnection and operation.
  •  Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance group and Measurement and Verification team to ensure testing and commissioning is implemented consistently across all projects.
  • Provide resource for application and compliance with national standards such as NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, ANSI, UL and IEEE.
  • Provide direct support for permitting and approval of designs leveraging a strong knowledge of local codes and standards to respond to AHJ comments.
  • Develop project-specific calculations and system modeling to verify or determine conductor sizing, short-circuit analysis, arc flash hazard, overcurrent coordination, voltage drop calculations etc.
  • Develop preliminary single line drawings through project development stage as well as peer review of final single line drawings as prepared by others, project specifications and means and methods
  • Other tasks as assigned by Manager.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related major
  • 5-7 years of engineering and design experience including distributed generation systems such as solar PV, energy storage and microgrids
  • Experience with performing load calculations, short-circuit, and coordination studies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with utilities and acting as the main technical contact to utilities for interconnection approval of on site generation systems.
  • Professional Engineering License – Electrical
 
Preferred:
  • Experience in building electrical systems and design, including sizing and specifying electrical service equipment, transformers, metering equipment, protective relaying and/or overcurrent devices, cable, conduit, switchboards, and panel boards.
  • Experience drafting or reviewing engineering services contracts.
                                                                  
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of utility rate schedules
  • Solid working knowledge of solar photovoltaic systems, energy storage systems and on site generation including microgrid applications. Demonstrated ability to identify different systems and equipment, identify potential value engineering measures, and collaborate to quantify the potential savings
  • Understand data acquisition and metering system design and implentation considerations
  • Competent in computer modeling software programs, such PVsyst, Energy Toolbase, Etap, SKM Systems Analysis
  • Proficient at designing service interconnection including medium voltage design up to 35KV
  • Demonstrate good  written and  verbal  communication skills in report writing and correspondence
  • Proficient at computer modeling/simulation of building operation
  • Excellent communication skills with employees and customers
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with project managers, clients, consulting engineers, design, and technical personnel as well as product vendors and manufacturing partners.
  • Must be confident and possess the ability to substantiate code interpretations and mathematically prove design concepts.
  • Ability to effectively communicate design concepts and lead meetings between clients, project engineers, code officials and third party consultants.


 WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to Travel 20% to 30 %  in continental US and Hawaii
  • Normal Office Environment and Field Environment, may be exposed to different weather elements
  • Able to get from office to off site customers – valid driver’s license required
